We are happy to support and partner with
Abigail Mejia (28yrs old from Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Lexy Elmaksoud Patton (28 yrs old from Michigan, USA) found each other after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Stomach Cancer. When they were first diagnosed they were told their case was very unique and not very common. Trying to find others in their same situation, they found each other through social media and connected immediately. Both being advocates for stomach cancer, specifically in the younger population, joined and started to reach out to other young women that had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Within the first week more than 30 girls found each other from all over the world, all with something in common: young women, often dismissed as healthy, who had to advocate to get diagnosed with stomach cancer. Together they created a community on Facebook called Stomach Cancer Sisters.
The primary objective of the group is to raise awareness about the rise of stomach cancer in the young adult population. This community was created for young women to share their journeys and stories, to ask for and receive advice. No topics are off limits. Together we are stronger.
We are broken-hearted that the founders of this group have left us much too soon. Lexy passed away in September of 2021, and Aby passed away in March of 2022. They will always be at the heart of this group, and their legacy will live on.
Today the group has over 300 members and meets virtually the first and third Tuesday of every month.
